Beneficial Nutrients of Titanium in Plant Nutrition
The necessary nutrients are directly related to the nutrition of the plant. These elements cannot be replaced by another nutrient in terms of their biological action and its lack does not allow the plant to complete its biological cycle.
Out of the 92 nutrients that are known to us, only 17 are necessary for plant growth. They are divided into macro- and micro-nutrients based on their concentration within the plant tissues.
In addition to the Essential nutrients, there are also some elements, which are indirectly related to the nutrition of plants and participate in several functions related to their growth. These elements are known as Beneficial Nutrients.
These elements are not necessary for the completion of the biological cycle of the plant, however they enhance its growth and development. More specifically:
- participate in strengthening the plant’s defense mechanisms against biotic and abiotic stresses such as high and low temperatures, drought, salinity, pathogenic microorganisms, etc.,
- improve the rate of absorption and utilization of the necessary nutrients,
- help limiting possible toxic effects of certain chemical elements, which may appear when they are in high concentrations.
That’s why elements such as Titanium (Ti) and Cobalt (Co) are Beneficial Elements and contribute to plant growth. This mainly concerns their participation in several physiological functions of plant metabolism.
Titanium – “Key” Element of Plant Metabolism
Titanium has been extensively studied for its beneficial effects and biological function in plant organisms for more than 100 years. Some examples of its action in plant metabolism are:
- the promotion of vegetative growth and the root system of plants,
- enhancing the absorption and the utilization of nutrients,
- the increase in chlorophyll content,
- the increase in production and the improvement of its antioxidant character,
- the extension of the post-harvest life of the fruits.
Furthermore, the element’s role is very important in strengthening plants not only against the abiotic stresses of low temperatures, dry heat conditions or heavy metals, but also in the activation of enzymes, which in turn catalyze specific basic functions of plant metabolism.
Cobalt – Elemental Bio activator.
Cobalt is a structural component of many enzymes and co-enzymes involved in metabolic processes. This makes it an essential nutrient for living organisms. It participates in a series of plant metabolism processes, affecting their growth and ultimately their performance.
Its role mainly concerns the strengthening of the binding of nitrogen in the tubers of the root system of legumes. This is due to it’s structural component of vitamin B12 (cobalamin). B12 participates as a catalytic factor in the nitrogen fixation process and in the development of tubercles.
In addition to the process of nitrogen fixation, cobalt offers a number of benefits to other plant species as well, as:
- promotes seed germination,
- inhibits ethylene production, thereby delaying the aging of plant tissues and maintaining high levels of
- the chlorophyll content (responsible for the intense “green color” of the leaf surface),
- protein levels,
- and the molecules of the genetic material,
- strengthens the resistance of plants against the abiotic stress of dry heat conditions.
