Crimson Grapes – Yield and Size Increase

Through the Agrology Success Stories in Greece and abroad, it is proven that the superior quality and integrated innovative technologies in Agrology Specialty Nutrition products make the difference in crops from the very first applications!

Our ultimate goal is to demonstrate that the Agrology Specialty Nutrition Programs constitute a profitable investment for producers, as the financial benefits more than cover the cost of the additional applications!

One such Success Story on table grapes of the Crimson variety (SS 2019_53_GR) was carried out in collaboration with the agricultural supplies store and Nutrimaster® “Agrokipos” of Litsi K. – Theodosidis G, during the 2019 Agricultural Season, with the aim of Increasing the Bunch Size. Throughout the applications, there was continuous guidance and technical support to the producer, both from the specialized staff of the technical department of Agrology, and the collaborating agricultural store “Agrokipos”.

Initially, the area was divided into two equal sections. One section was named Control and the second was named Agrology Program.  In both, the producer proceeded with the same cultivation care and implemented the exact same scheme of plant protection and nutrition – fertilization. However, in the Agrology Section, the producer implemented additional interventions using the Specialized and Innovative Products of Agrology.

Specialized Nutrition – Fertilizing Program

The applications were carried out with hydro-fertilizers and foliarly, at the appropriate stages, which were selected based on the requirements of each germination stage of the vineyard.

  • Nodius® F-Kin (200 cc/100lt):

To cause intense cell division and increase cell size, ultimately aiming to boost fruit setting and increase the size of the grapes.

It was applied 3 times in the following stages: a) Before flowering b) During Fruit Setting and c) Grape Growth (pea-size grape).

  • XGel® Emerald 15- 65-15 (300 cc/100lt):

Phosphorus-rich nutritional concentrate.

Applied during Flowering.

  • Inca® Ultra (CaO 9,5% + 0,8% Zn + 8% N – 150 cc/100lt):

Liquid calcium nutrition supplement, enhanced with zinc and nitrogen to improve the hardness and reduce the tearing of the skin of the grapes.

Applied at the beginning of Flowering.

  • Gravital® Force SC (35% CaO + 35% SiO – 2 lt/1,000 sq. m.):

Silicon and calcium preparation to boost fruit setting.

Applied during Fruit Setting.

  • XGel® Sapphire 25-25-25 (300 cc/100lt):

Extremely concentrated balanced nutritional product

Applied during Fruit Setting.

  • XGel® Topaz 0 – 50 -50 (300 cc/100lt):

Highly concentrated nutritional product rich in Phosphorus and Potassium, to improve the color of the grapes and increase its sugar content.

Applied twice during the following stages: a) Shining and b) Fruit Ripening.

  • Suprafix® MoΒo (10% – B + 0,5% Mo – 100 cc/100lt):

Mixture of boron and molybdenum elements for the Increase of the Size and the Number of grapes, to Boost Color Intensity, and to Improve Post-harvest Life of the product.

Applied twice during the following stages: a) Shining and b) Fruit Ripening.

The rest of the Nutrition – Fertilizing program was the one usually applied by this specific producer and was the same for both sections (Control + Agrology, throughout the cultivation season.

Proof Results

After taking samples from both sections (Control and Agrology) from Crimson grapes, it was observed that the treatment of the Agrology program generated impressive results for the benefit of the producer. More specifically, with this Scheme we achieved:

Increase in Total Production by 37%

  • Agrology: 1808 kg/1,000 sq. m.
  • Control: 1320 kg/1,000 sq. m.
Picture 2. Increase of Total Production

Increase by 50% of the bunch length

  • Agrology: 30 cm
  • Control: 20 cm
Picture 3. Increase of Bunch Length

Boost Uniformity of Size among Bunches

The upper side of the image shows a sample of bunches of the Crimson variety from the Agrology program, which typically show uniformity in size, as opposed to those of the Control Section at the lower side of the image.

Picture 4. Increase Uniformity in the Size of the Bunch

Increase of Bunch Weight by 35% – 40%

  • Agrology: 1007 gr
  • Control: 754 gr

Increase of Grape Size

With the Agrology Program, the grapes were longer (elongated), which is the commercially desired shape. At the same time, the grapes grew bigger in vertical and horizontal diameter, by 23.6 and 11.3% respectively, in relation to those of the Control Section (Pictures 6 & 7). The laboratories of ELGO Dimitra Thessaloniki performed the measurements of the program.

Increase of Grape Color by 30,2%

(Measurements in the labs of ELGO Dimitra Thessaloniki)

  • Agrology: 11,4
  • Control: 8,8

Investment – Producer benefit

The increase of the production by 488 kg/1,000 sq. m. (37%) and the Improvement of the Quality of the product, with an average selling price of 0.95 €/kg, contributed to the increase of the producer’s revenue by 463.6 €/1,000 sq. m., while the cost of the supplementary applications merely amounted to €38.05.

Therefore, the producer had an additional financial benefit due to a general improvement in the quality of production:

  • Increase of Bunch Length: +50%
  • Increase of Bunch Weight: +35-40%
  • Improvement of Uniformity of Size and Shape among Bunches
  • Grape Size Increase: +23.6% and 11.3%
  • Increase of Grape Weight: +32%
  • Improvement of Color +30.2%

The Cost-Benefit Ratio Ratio, which is 1:12, i.e. for each Euro the producer is investing in the nutritional preparations of the Agrology program, he receives an additional income of €12.
